Beyond Ultras

The Reason I Opted for a Running Coach

Embarking on the grueling journey of ultra-distance running can be described as both an exhilarating conquest and a test of endurance. Completing such races, marked by sheer determination and perseverance, often leaves one with a sense of accomplishment that knows no bounds. Yet, contrary to expectations, it was precisely after conquering these daunting ultras that I made the decision to enlist the expertise of a running coach.

For years, I trained hard and pushed my limits, finishing ultra-marathons that once seemed impossible. I crossed finish lines and proudly hung medals on my wall, but I still felt like I hadn’t reached my full potential in long-distance running.

I wasn’t doubting my abilities; I just wanted to keep getting better. Even though ultras had made me tougher, I knew I needed more than just my own efforts to reach my best.

So, I decided to get a running coach. The coach wasn’t there to “fix” anything; they were there to help me improve. They brought a new perspective and lots of experience to my training. With their guidance, I could dig deeper into my strengths and work on any weaknesses.

The coach helped me answer the questions that had lingered after my ultra finishes. How could I get faster without losing endurance? What small adjustments could prevent injuries and improve recovery? With the coach, it wasn’t just about adding miles. It was about understanding each step, learning the best techniques, and creating a training plan that would push my limits even further.

Hiring a coach wasn’t because I felt inadequate; it was because I wanted to keep growing. The journey with the coach transformed my running from just finishing races to constantly evolving as an athlete. It showed me that no matter how many races I’d completed, there was always room to improve and new goals to chase.

Looking back, choosing to work with a coach was a turning point. It shifted my running journey from being a solo pursuit to a shared effort toward self-discovery and growth. Now, each mile reminds me that progress isn’t just about reaching finish lines—it’s about becoming the best version of myself.
